Travel Guide — Seoul

🌏Overview

Seoul sits in a bowl between four mountains, split by the Han River into two cities of opposite character: to the north, the Joseon palaces, the lanes of Bukchon and the covered markets; to the south, Gangnam with its towers and clinics. It is also the most connected city on earth — fibre arrived here before anywhere else, and the metro has signal in every tunnel.

🏙️Major Cities
Seoul
9.4 million

Twenty-five districts on either side of the Han. Jongno and Jung-gu hold the palaces and historic markets, Hongdae the student crowd, Gangnam and Seongsu the contemporary scene.

Incheon
3 million

An hour away, the country's gateway port and its airport. Korea's oldest Chinatown, and Songdo, a new city built on reclaimed land.

Suwon
1.2 million

An hour south, the Hwaseong Fortress and its 5.7 km of 18th-century walls, UNESCO-listed and walkable end to end.

DMZ and Paju
500,000

An hour north, the demilitarised zone dividing the two Koreas. Guided visit only, passport required, book several days ahead.

Gangneung
210,000

Two hours east by KTX, the East Sea coast. Beaches, seafront cafés and the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic park.

⭐Top Attractions
  1. Gyeongbokgung Palace 🏛️ Culture

The main one of five Joseon palaces, founded in 1395, destroyed and rebuilt. Changing of the guard at 10 am and 2 pm. Entry is free for anyone wearing hanbok, rented from nearby shops — hence the costumed groups in the courtyards.

  2. Bukchon Hanok Village 📍 Architecture

900 traditional houses, lived in, wedged between two palaces. These are real homes: signs ask for quiet after 5 pm, and residents mean it.

  3. Gwangjang Market 🍜 Food

A covered market from 1905, the country's oldest. You eat sitting at the counter: bindaetteok, mung bean pancakes ground on a stone mill, mayak gimbap and yukhoe beef tartare.

  4. Cheonggyecheon Stream 🌆 Urban

Eleven kilometres of watercourse brought back to daylight in 2005, under an elevated motorway demolished for the purpose. A walk below the traffic, now the global textbook case of urban stream restoration.

  5. Bukhansan 🌿 Nature

A national park of granite peaks reachable by metro from the centre. A rare capital where you can set off on a mountain hike without leaving the city — Seoulites climb it in force at weekends.

☀️Weather & Seasons
🌍
Climate

Continental climate with four sharply distinct seasons and a summer monsoon. The annual range exceeds 40°C between January and August.

✅
Best Time to Visit

Late April to early June, and above all September to November: clear skies, dry air, red maples in October.

⚠️
Avoid

July and August, which combine the monsoon (jangma) with 33°C and crushing humidity. January regularly drops to −10°C with a Siberian wind.

Spring (Mar–May)
5°C to 23°C

Cherry blossom around 10 April, notably at Yeouido. Watch for fine dust blown in from the continent — check an air quality app.

Summer (Jun–Aug)
22°C to 33°C

Monsoon in July, heavy heat in August. Seoulites retreat to the air-conditioned basements of the malls.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)
8°C to 27°C

The finest season. Crisp air, maples at Bukhansan and Namsan from late October.

Winter (Dec–Feb)
−10°C to 4°C

Dry and biting. Little snow but a penetrating cold. Street markets serve scalding hotteok and bungeoppang.

📋Practical Info
  • 🛂
Visa No visa and no K-ETA for most Western European, North American and Australian nationals: the K-ETA exemption runs to the end of 2026, with 90-day stays. Check it still stands before you travel — it is renewed year by year. Customs and health declarations are now filed online via Q-CODE.
  • 🔌
Voltage 220 V, Type F sockets, identical to French and German plugs. No adapter needed from continental Europe.
  • 💧
Eau Tap water is drinkable and monitored, though Koreans rarely drink it straight. Free filtered fountains in metro stations, cafés and public buildings.
  • 💸
Pourboire There is no tipping culture in South Korea, and leaving one can cause awkwardness. The listed price is the price paid, service included.
  • 💵
Argent Korea is among the most cashless countries on earth: cards work everywhere, down to a 1,000 KRW purchase. Still carry some cash for traditional markets. Note that many terminals reject foreign cards — favour Visa and Mastercard, and carry a second card.
  • 🏥
Santé No mandatory vaccinations. Healthcare is excellent and affordable compared with North America. Pharmacies (약국) are everywhere. Watch air quality in spring, when fine particulates regularly exceed thresholds.
  • 🚨
    Urgences Medical and fire: 119 | Police: 112 | Multilingual tourist helpline (24/7): 1330
🛡️Safety
★★★★★ Extremely Safe

Seoul ranks among the safest large cities in the world. Walking alone at 3 am is unremarkable, phones are left on café tables to hold a seat, and shared bikes sit unlocked. The density of cameras and a strong civic norm both play a part.

📍 Areas to Watch

No district needs avoiding. The bar streets of Hongdae and Itaewon get loud at weekends without being dangerous. The only real discomfort is the metro crush at rush hour.

⚠️ Common Scams

  • Bar touts in Itaewon and Gangnam offering undisclosed table fees — ask the price before sitting down
  • Fake monks selling amulets near tourist sites, an imported practice unrelated to Korean Buddhism
  • Payment terminals quietly refusing foreign cards, then offering a 'cash arrangement' at a poor rate

💡 Safety Tips

  • Since the 2022 Itaewon crush, avoid narrow sloping streets during major gatherings, Halloween in particular
  • Emergency alerts arrive by SMS in Korean over the mobile network: the Emergency Ready app translates them
  • For lost property, the police Lost 112 system centralises found items, and the metro runs its own offices per line
📱Mobile Connectivity
Network Coverage The densest coverage in the world. 5G everywhere, including all 23 metro lines, road tunnels and mall basements. Korea launched the first commercial 5G network in 2019.
Network Quality ★★★★★
Operators SK Telecom, KT (Korea Telecom), LG U+

📶 Why you'll need mobile data

  • Naver Map or KakaoMap are essential: Google Maps is restricted in Korea for national security reasons and gives no reliable walking directions
  • Kakao T for taxis, since Uber has only a marginal presence
  • Translating market and small-restaurant menus, rarely transliterated
  • Paying for and topping up a T-money card from the phone rather than at machines
  • Receiving emergency alerts, broadcast in Korean over the mobile network and translatable on the spot

Activate your ZapSim eSIM before you fly — connected on landing at Incheon, with Naver Map working before you even board the AREX.

🚄Getting Around

✈️ From the Airport

Incheon (ICN): the AREX express reaches Seoul Station in 43 min (11,000 KRW), the all-stops train in 60 min for 4,500 KRW. Limousine buses serve major hotels in 60-90 min. Gimpo (GMP), the domestic airport, is 30 min from the centre on line 9.

🗺️ Getting Around

The metro has 23 lines reaching far into the suburbs, with English announcements and signage. A T-money card, bought at any convenience store for 2,500 KRW, works on the metro, buses and even taxis. Taxis are affordable and honest, always metered.

📱 Essential Apps

  • Naver Map or KakaoMap — the only genuinely usable maps in Korea
  • Kakao T — taxis, with integrated payment
  • Subway Korea — metro map and offline routing
💡

Don't rely on Google Maps as your main tool: Korean restrictions on mapping data make it unusable for walking and vague for transit. Naver Map offers an English interface.

💰Budget & Costs
🍜 Budget Meal 7,000-10,000 KRW (kimbap, neighbourhood restaurant, canteen)
🍽️ Mid-Range Meal 20,000-45,000 KRW per person
🛏️ Budget Stay 40,000-70,000 KRW (guesthouse, motel)
🏨 Mid-Range Stay 120,000-220,000 KRW
🎒 Backpacker Budget 70,000-100,000 KRW per day
✨ Comfort Budget 200,000-350,000 KRW per day

💡 Eating Korean is cheap, eating Western is not: a 6,000 KRW latte costs more than a full canteen meal. Side dishes (banchan) are free and refilled on request, which makes shared meals very economical.

🎌Culture & Etiquette

✅ Do

  • Give and receive with both hands, or the right hand supported by the left — for money, a business card, a drink
  • Wait for the eldest person to start eating before you serve yourself
  • Turn your head slightly to drink alcohol in front of someone older, a mark of respect
  • Take your shoes off in traditional raised-floor restaurants and in homes
  • Queue on the floor markings in the metro: the discipline is total

❌ Don't

  • Don't stand chopsticks in rice, a gesture reserved for funeral offerings
  • Don't pour your own drink: you fill the other person's glass and they fill yours
  • Don't write a name in red ink, which is reserved for the deceased
  • Don't speak loudly on the phone in the metro: silence is the norm despite the crowds

💡 Did you know?

  • Korea launched the world's first commercial 5G network in April 2019, hours ahead of the United States
  • Seoul has more than 15,000 cafés, the highest density per capita in the world
  • The metro has heated seats in winter and lost-property offices per line, with a recovery rate above 70%
  • The Han River runs up to a kilometre wide in the city, more than the Seine and the Thames combined
❓Travel FAQ
How many days do I need in Seoul?
Four full days for the city: one for the palaces and Bukchon, one for the markets and historic centre, one for Gangnam and Seongsu, one for Hongdae and a hike up Bukhansan. Add a day for the DMZ, which must be booked ahead.
Does Google Maps work in Korea?
Poorly, and this catches people out. Korea restricts the export of detailed mapping data for national security reasons: Google Maps gives no walking directions and stays vague on transit. Install Naver Map or KakaoMap before you go — both have English interfaces.
Do I need a K-ETA?
Not currently: most Western European, North American and Australian nationals are exempt until the end of 2026. Since the measure is renewed annually, check the official site before booking. The health and customs declaration is filed online via Q-CODE.
Do I really need mobile data in Seoul?
Yes, more than most places. Naver Map and Kakao T are essential and work poorly offline, menus are rarely transliterated, and emergency alerts arrive by SMS in Korean over the mobile network. Public wifi is everywhere, but relying on it pins you between hotspots.
