At 37 million people, Greater Tokyo is the most populous metropolitan area on earth — and among the most orderly. The city has no single centre: it is organised around a dozen hubs strung along the circular Yamanote line, each with its own character. Shibuya and its youth, Shinjuku and its towers, Ginza and its luxury, Asakusa and its prewar Tokyo, Akihabara and its electronics. You don't visit Tokyo, you visit neighbourhoods connected by trains.
Twenty-three special wards, each the size of a European city. The Yamanote line traces the central loop in 34 minutes and links almost every district that matters to a visitor.
Japan's second city, 30 minutes away. The first port opened to foreigners in 1859, it still holds the country's largest Chinatown and a contemporary waterfront at Minato Mirai.
An hour south, the 13th-century shogunal capital. The open-air bronze Great Buddha, dozens of temples and a beach — the most restful day trip from Tokyo.
Two hours north, in the mountains. The Tosho-gu shrine, the baroque mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, is one of the most ornate complexes in Japan, set among centuries-old cedars.
90 minutes away, the benchmark hot spring resort. Onsen, the volcanic Owakudani valley and, on a clear day, the finest view of Mount Fuji from Lake Ashi.
Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in 645. You reach it through the Kaminarimon gate and its 700 kg red lantern, then along Nakamise-dori, a shopping street several centuries old. Come before 8 am to have it to yourself.
Up to 3,000 people cross at once on each light cycle. The best vantage point is free, from the station walkway or the Tsutaya Starbucks; Shibuya Sky, higher up, is paid and needs booking.
A Shinto shrine inside a forest of 100,000 hand-planted trees, steps from Harajuku. The contrast between the silence of its avenues and the crowds of Takeshita-dori next door sums Tokyo up.
An immersive digital museum in Toyosu: you walk barefoot through water, surrounded by projections that respond to your presence. Timed tickets are compulsory and often sell out a week ahead.
The auctions moved to Toyosu, but the Tsukiji outer market kept its 400 stalls: sea urchin, tamagoyaki, wagyu skewers. Before 11 am, this is where Tokyo has breakfast.
Humid subtropical with four distinct seasons. Summers are heavy and stormy, winters dry and sunny — central Tokyo rarely sees more than one or two days of snow a year.
Late March to early April for the cherry blossom, and late October to early December for maple colour and very clear skies.
June for the rainy season, July and August for the humid heat, and September for peak typhoon activity.
Cherry blossom peaks around 28 March at Ueno and along the Meguro river. Book accommodation months ahead.
Tsuyu until mid-July, then heat and high humidity. The Sumida fireworks in late July are worth the stickiness.
Typhoons possible in September. November is superb: crisp air, red maples at Rikugien and Showa Kinen Park.
Dry cold and blue skies. This is when Mount Fuji is visible from the Shinjuku towers, and when illuminations light up Marunouchi and Roppongi.
Tokyo is consistently ranked among the safest large cities in the world. Walking alone at 2 am is unremarkable, bicycles are often left unlocked, and a wallet forgotten on a train very often comes back to its owner.
No district is genuinely dangerous. Kabukicho in Shinjuku does concentrate bar touts and venues with opaque billing: that is a commercial trap, not a physical risk.
Activate your ZapSim eSIM before you fly — connected on landing at Narita or Haneda, so you can find your connection without hunting for a counter.
Get my eSIMNarita (NRT): Narita Express to Shinjuku in 80 min (¥3,250, covered by the JR Pass) or Keisei Skyliner to Ueno in 41 min (¥2,580). Haneda (HND), far closer: monorail to Hamamatsucho in 15 min or the Keikyu line to Shinagawa in 11 min, for around ¥500. With equal luggage, Haneda saves an hour and ¥2,000.
The JR Yamanote line loops the centre in 34 minutes, serving Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ueno and Tokyo stations. Below it run 13 subway lines operated by two separate companies, Tokyo Metro and Toei — the same journey can cost more if it switches operator. A Suica or Pasmo card handles all of it automatically.
Avoid the Yamanote and Chuo lines between 7:30 and 9 am with suitcases: loading exceeds 150% and staff physically push passengers aboard. Station coin lockers fill early; the Ecbo Cloak app lets you reserve luggage storage instead.
💡 Tokyo runs about 20% above Osaka on accommodation, but eating out stays surprisingly affordable: a very good bowl of ramen costs under ¥1,200. The unbudgeted expense is trains, at ¥200-400 a journey, several times a day.
