Travel Guide — Miami

🌏Overview

Miami is the United States' gateway to Latin America, and you hear it from the airport onwards: Spanish is more common than English across much of the city. Beyond the beaches it is a collection of sharply distinct neighbourhoods — the Art Deco of South Beach, the murals of Wynwood, the finance towers of Brickell, the Cuban coffee counters of Little Havana. It is also the world's busiest cruise port and the natural base for the Everglades and the Keys.

🏙️Major Cities
Miami
450,000

The central city holds Downtown, the towers of Brickell, Little Havana and Wynwood. PortMiami and most of the cultural life are here, while the beach sits across the bay.

Miami Beach
82,000

A separate municipality on a barrier island linked by several causeways. South Beach, its Art Deco district and Ocean Drive are all here — this is the Miami most people picture.

Fort Lauderdale
185,000

45 minutes north, known for its navigable canals and its own international airport (FLL), often cheaper to fly into than MIA.

Key West
25,000

At the end of the Overseas Highway, a 3.5-hour drive across 42 bridges. The southernmost point of the continental United States, with a Caribbean feel and Hemingway's house.

Orlando
320,000

3.5 hours by road or 3 hours on the Brightline train, the theme park capital: Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando and SeaWorld.

⭐Top Attractions
  1. South Beach and the Art Deco District 📍 Architecture

More than 800 Art Deco buildings from the 1920s-40s line Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue — the largest concentration anywhere in the world. The pastel façades switch to neon after dark.

  2. Wynwood Walls 🏛️ Culture

A former warehouse district turned open-air street art museum since 2009. Dozens of large-scale murals, regularly repainted, surrounded by galleries and craft breweries.

  3. Everglades National Park 🌿 Nature

An hour west, 6,000 km² of subtropical wetland: alligators, manatees and more than 350 bird species. Shark Valley and its 24 km loop trail are the best introduction.

  4. Little Havana and Calle Ocho 🏛️ Culture

The heart of Cuban exile since 1959. Dominoes at Máximo Gómez Park, cigars rolled by hand, and a cafecito taken standing at a ventanita window counter.

  5. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens 📍 Architecture

A Venetian-inspired villa completed in 1916 on Biscayne Bay, with ten hectares of Italianate gardens. The most complete historical counterpoint to contemporary Miami.

☀️Weather & Seasons
🌍
Climate

Tropical monsoon climate: warm year-round, with a distinct dry winter season and a humid summer marked by short, violent daily downpours.

✅
Best Time to Visit

November to April: 20-27°C, low humidity, almost no rain. It is also high season, with prices to match.

⚠️
Avoid

June to November is hurricane season, peaking from August to October. July and August combine heat, humidity and daily thunderstorms.

Winter (Dec–Feb)
16°C to 25°C

The best window, and the most expensive. Dry air, sea at 22°C. Book far ahead around the holidays and Art Basel in early December.

Spring (Mar–May)
20°C to 29°C

Still pleasant, with spring break saturating South Beach in March. Humidity climbs noticeably by May.

Summer (Jun–Aug)
25°C to 33°C

Hot and very humid, with late-afternoon thunderstorms almost daily. Hotel rates at their lowest and sea at 30°C.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)
23°C to 31°C

September and October are the peak of hurricane season. November swings to ideal conditions and stays uncrowded.

📋Practical Info
  • 🛂
Visa An ESTA authorisation is mandatory for Visa Waiver Program nationals: apply online at least 72 hours before departure, 21 USD, valid two years. Canadians are exempt. A biometric passport is required.
  • 🔌
Voltage 120 V, Type A and B plugs (flat pins). An adapter is enough for most modern chargers, which accept 100-240 V.
  • 💧
Eau Tap water is drinkable and monitored across Miami-Dade County. Its strong taste leads many residents to filter it, with no health reason to do so.
  • 💸
Pourboire Culturally mandatory: 18-22% in restaurants, 1-2 USD per drink at a bar, 2-5 USD per night for housekeeping. Note that many South Beach venues add an automatic 18-20% service charge — check the bill before adding a tip on top.
  • 💵
Argent Cards work absolutely everywhere, including for a 3 USD coffee. Cash is genuinely useful only at some markets and for tips. Tell your bank you are travelling to avoid a security block.
  • 🏥
Santé No mandatory vaccinations. American healthcare is excellent but the most expensive in the world: an emergency room visit routinely exceeds 1,500 USD. Travel insurance with a high medical ceiling is not optional. Mosquitoes are present near the Everglades.
  • 🚨
Urgences Emergencies (police, fire, ambulance): 911 | Miami Police non-emergency: 305-579-6111
🛡️Safety
★★★★☆ Safe

Miami's visitor areas — South Beach, Brickell, Wynwood by day, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove — are safe and busy. As in any large American city, safety varies sharply between neighbourhoods, sometimes from one street to the next.

📍 Areas to Watch

Avoid Overtown, Liberty City and Opa-locka, particularly at night. Wynwood is lively by day but its outer streets empty once the galleries close. On the beach, never leave belongings unattended.

⚠️ Common Scams

  • Ocean Drive restaurants adding an 18-20% service charge and then presenting a blank tip line — you risk paying twice
  • Club promoters offering free entry that turns into a compulsory drink minimum
  • Fake parking attendants taking cash for spaces that are actually free or payable at the meter

💡 Safety Tips

  • Never leave anything visible in a rental car: break-ins at beach and trailhead car parks are the leading crime against visitors
  • Swim between the flags in patrolled zones: rip currents are the leading cause of drowning in Florida
  • During hurricane season, enable National Hurricane Center app alerts and locate your hotel's evacuation plan
📱Mobile Connectivity
Network Coverage Excellent 4G/5G coverage across Miami-Dade, including Miami Beach, the Metromover and the MIA terminals. Signal degrades markedly in the Everglades and on the longest bridges of the Overseas Highway towards the Keys.
Network Quality ★★★★★
Operators Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile

📶 Why you'll need mobile data

  • Uber and Lyft are essential: Miami is a sprawling, car-designed city and street taxis are rare away from hotels
  • Google Maps for moving between neighbourhoods split by the bay, across causeways and drawbridges that open for boat traffic
  • Booking Everglades airboat slots and Keys excursions, frequently sold out in high season
  • PayByPhone and ParkMobile handle nearly all parking in Miami Beach: with no data, you simply cannot pay
  • Receiving hurricane alerts and evacuation orders, which are pushed first over the mobile network

🚄Getting Around

✈️ From the Airport

Miami International (MIA): the MIA Mover links the terminals to the intermodal station free of charge, where the Metrorail reaches Downtown in 15 min (2.25 USD). Uber or Lyft to South Beach: 25-40 USD in 25 min. Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is 45 min north and often cheaper to fly into.

🗺️ Getting Around

The Metromover is free and covers Downtown and Brickell. The Metrorail serves a single corridor, insufficient for most itineraries. Miami Beach is reachable only by bus, so most visitors alternate between Uber and a rental car. The Brightline train reaches Fort Lauderdale in 30 min and Orlando in 3.5 hours.

📱 Essential Apps

  • Uber and Lyft — both work everywhere; compare prices, which swing widely by time of day
  • PayByPhone — parking in Miami Beach, required at almost every space
  • Brightline — trains to Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Orlando
💡

Renting a car only makes sense for the Everglades, the Keys or Orlando. In South Beach parking runs 4 USD an hour and hotels charge 40-60 USD a night: rent only on the day you head out of town.

💰Budget & Costs
🍜 Budget Meal 12-18 USD (Cuban counter, food hall, taqueria)
🍽️ Mid-Range Meal 35-70 USD per person
🛏️ Budget Stay 90-150 USD off season, 160-250 USD in winter
🏨 Mid-Range Stay 250-450 USD in winter in South Beach
🎒 Backpacker Budget 110-160 USD per day
✨ Comfort Budget 300-500 USD per day

💡 Miami is one of the most expensive American cities in high season. Two costs catch people out: the 30-50 USD nightly resort fee added after booking, and the automatic 18-20% service charge in many restaurants. Listed prices never include the 7% sales tax.

🎌Culture & Etiquette

✅ Do

  • Try your Spanish: in Little Havana, Hialeah or Doral it is the default language and the effort always lands well
  • Order a cafecito at a ventanita counter in the late afternoon — it is a social ritual, not just a coffee
  • Check the bill before adding a tip, since service is often already included
  • Carry a layer: indoor air conditioning is glacial year-round
  • Respect swimming flags and alligator warning signs near the Everglades

❌ Don't

  • Don't assume Miami resembles the rest of Florida or the United States: culturally the city is far more Caribbean and Latin American
  • Don't rely on public transport for a whole trip — the network does not cover the visitor areas
  • Don't leave anything visible in your car, ever
  • Don't underestimate the sun: the UV index exceeds 10 for much of the year

💡 Did you know?

  • Miami is the only major American city founded by a woman: Julia Tuttle, in 1896
  • Around 70% of residents speak Spanish at home, the highest share of any large US city
  • PortMiami is the busiest cruise port in the world, with more than 7 million passengers a year
  • Miami Beach's Art Deco district holds over 800 protected buildings, the largest concentration of that architecture anywhere
❓Travel FAQ
Do I need a car in Miami?
Not for a trip centred on South Beach, Downtown and Wynwood: Uber and the free Metromover cover it, and parking is expensive. A car becomes essential the moment you aim for the Everglades, the Keys or Orlando. The cheapest approach is to rent only on excursion days.
Will my eSIM work on a cruise leaving PortMiami?
Yes throughout the port and anywhere on land. Once the ship leaves coastal range, only the vessel's satellite service remains, billed separately by the cruise line. Download offline maps and boarding passes before departure, and switch data off at sea to avoid maritime roaming charges.
Does coverage hold up in the Everglades and towards Key West?
Along the Overseas Highway, signal is good in the Keys towns and becomes patchy on the longest bridges, notably the Seven Mile Bridge. In the Everglades expect coverage near the visitor centres and Shark Valley, but close to none in the backcountry — download offline maps before you set off.
When is the best time to visit Miami?
November to April: 20-27°C, dry air and very little rain. It is also the most expensive stretch. May and November offer the best price-to-weather balance. Avoid August to October, the core of hurricane season.
