New York spans five boroughs, of which only one, Manhattan, occupies the imagination — while Queens alone is the most linguistically diverse place on earth, with more than 160 languages spoken. The street grid, laid out in 1811 before the city had even reached 14th Street, explains why you can navigate without a map above Houston Street, and why you get completely lost below it.
The central island, from the financial tip to Harlem. Midtown for skyscrapers and theatres, the Village and SoHo for the pre-grid streets, the Upper East and West Sides for museums and Central Park.
The most populous of the five boroughs. Williamsburg and Bushwick for the creative scene, Dumbo for the bridge view, Park Slope and Prospect Park for the residential brownstone city.
The largest and most diverse. Flushing for one of the biggest Chinese communities outside Asia, Astoria for Greece and Egypt, Jackson Heights for India and Colombia.
Birthplace of hip-hop in 1973, home to Yankee Stadium, the largest urban zoo in the United States and the New York Botanical Garden.
Linked by a free ferry that passes the Statue of Liberty — the best free viewpoint over the harbour and the skyline.
341 hectares, entirely artificial: every hill, lake and grove was designed by Olmsted and Vaux in the 1850s, on marshland that was blasted, drained and replanted with half a million trees.
Two million works spanning 5,000 years, from the Temple of Dendur to the rooftop terrace over the park. Admission is pay-what-you-wish for New York State residents, fixed for overseas visitors.
A gift from France in 1886, it watched twelve million migrants pass through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954. Crown access must be booked months ahead.
A 2.3 km disused elevated railway turned into a planted walkway in 2009, since copied worldwide. It links the Meatpacking District to Hudson Yards, passing above the streets.
The main concourse ceiling shows the night sky — reversed, from a misread medieval manuscript. Under the eastern ramp, the whispering gallery carries a voice from one corner to the other.
Humid continental climate with four distinct seasons, moderated by the Atlantic. The extremes are real: 35°C in July, −8°C in January with a wind that funnels up the avenues.
Late April to early June, and September to early November: 15-25°C, clear skies, parks at their best.
July and August, heavy and humid, with no air conditioning on underground subway platforms. January and February for the biting cold and snowstorms.
Cherry blossom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in late April. Unsettled weather through April.
Hot and humid. Outdoor cinema, free concerts in Central Park, and violent late-afternoon thunderstorms.
The best season. Foliage in October, the marathon in early November, remarkable light between the towers.
Dry cold and wind. Christmas displays, ice rinks, and the year's lowest hotel rates in January.
New York is now among the safest large cities in the United States, a long way from its 1980s reputation. Times Square, the subway and the tourist districts are constantly patrolled. The real risk is limited to opportunistic theft and a few isolated stations late at night.
Manhattan, northern Brooklyn and western Queens are safe at any hour in busy areas. Avoid deserted subway platforms after midnight and pick an occupied car. Parts of the South Bronx and eastern Brooklyn hold no tourist interest.
Activate your ZapSim eSIM before you fly — connected on landing at JFK, with the AirTrain and subway already mapped before you leave the terminal.
Get my eSIMJFK: AirTrain to Jamaica or Howard Beach (8.50 USD) then the subway, about 60 min for 11 USD total; a flat-rate taxi to Manhattan is 70 USD plus tolls and tip. LaGuardia (LGA): the free Q70 bus to the subway, 40 min. Newark (EWR), in New Jersey, connects by AirTrain and NJ Transit to Penn Station in 45 min.
The subway runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week — almost unique in the world. Pay with OMNY by tapping a contactless bank card or phone at the turnstile: 2.90 USD a ride, free after the twelfth in a week. Buses fill the gaps above ground, usually slower. Walking is still the best way to move around Manhattan.
Don't buy a MetroCard: OMNY takes your contactless bank card directly and applies the weekly cap automatically, and the MetroCard is being phased out entirely.
💡 Always budget 30% above the listed price once the 8.875% sales tax and a 20% tip are added: this is the single most common budgeting mistake. In return, the Staten Island Ferry, the High Line, Central Park and the summer concerts are all free.
