Travel Guide — Osaka

🌏Overview

Japan's second-largest urban area and the economic heart of Kansai, Osaka cultivates an identity deliberately opposed to Tokyo's: blunter, louder, built around food. Nicknamed "the nation's kitchen" (tenka no daidokoro), the city made its name on takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu rather than temples. It also works as the ideal base for the Kansai region — Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and Himeji are all under an hour away by train.

🏙️Major Cities
Osaka
2.7 million

The centre splits between Kita (Umeda), the station and business hub, and Minami (Namba, Shinsaibashi), the entertainment district where Dotonbori sits. Osaka Castle and Tennoji complete the tourist triangle.

Kyoto
1.5 million

The former imperial capital, 15 minutes away by rapid train. Roughly 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, including Fushimi Inari and Kiyomizu-dera. The most common day trip from Osaka.

Kobe
1.5 million

A cosmopolitan port 20 minutes away, known for its beef, the Nankinmachi Chinatown and the night view from Mount Rokko.

Nara
350,000

Japan's first permanent capital, 45 minutes away. Nara Park with its free-roaming deer, and Todai-ji, which houses a 15-metre bronze Buddha.

Himeji
525,000

An hour west, Himeji Castle is the finest surviving feudal castle in Japan — never destroyed, never rebuilt, and a World Heritage Site.

⭐Top Attractions
  1. Dotonbori 🌆 Urban

Osaka's most photographed strip, running along the canal: giant animated signs, the Glico running man, the mechanical crab of Kani Doraku. This is where the evening street food concentrates.

  2. Osaka Castle 🏛️ Culture

Rebuilt in 1931 on Toyotomi Hideyoshi's foundations, it commands a 106-hectare park that turns spectacular during cherry blossom season. The museum inside traces the unification of Japan.

  3. Universal Studios Japan 🌆 Urban

Japan's second most visited theme park. Super Nintendo World and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter are the headline areas — online timed-entry booking is close to mandatory in high season.

  4. Kuromon Ichiba Market 🍜 Food

A 580-metre covered market nicknamed "Osaka's kitchen". Sea urchin, tuna sliced in front of you, wagyu grilled at the counter — you eat standing, between the stalls.

  5. Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku 🌆 Urban

A district frozen in 1950s Japan, dominated by Tsutenkaku Tower. The capital of kushikatsu, with its one absolute rule: never double-dip a skewer in the communal sauce.

☀️Weather & Seasons
🌍
Climate

Humid subtropical, noticeably more oppressive than Tokyo in summer because of the Kansai basin. Four distinct seasons, with a rainy season (tsuyu) in June.

✅
Best Time to Visit

Late March to May (cherry blossom, then mild weather) and October to early December (maple colours, clear skies).

⚠️
Avoid

Mid-July to late August: 35°C with 80% humidity. June for the tsuyu, September for peak typhoon season.

Spring (Mar–May)
10°C to 24°C

Cherry blossom peaks around the first week of April at Osaka Castle. The best season, and the busiest.

Summer (Jun–Aug)
24°C to 35°C

Tsuyu in June, then heavy heat. Festival season: the Tenjin Matsuri in late July is one of Japan's three biggest.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)
15°C to 28°C

Typhoons possible in September, then ideal conditions. Maples turn at Minoo and in Kyoto around mid-November.

Winter (Dec–Feb)
3°C to 12°C

Dry cold, snow is rare in the city. Illuminations at Umeda and Nakanoshima, and far smaller crowds.

📋Practical Info
  • 🛂
Visa No visa required for most Western European, North American, Australian and New Zealand nationals: 90-day visa exemption on arrival. A passport valid for the length of your stay is enough. Since 2025, pre-registering on Visit Japan Web noticeably speeds up immigration and customs at Kansai International.
  • 🔌
Voltage 100 V, Type A plugs (same as North America), 60 Hz in Kansai. An adapter is enough for most modern chargers.
  • 💧
Eau Tap water is drinkable everywhere and among the safest in the world. Public fountains are common in parks and stations.
  • 💸
Pourboire Tipping is not customary and can come across as awkward. Service is always included. In Osaka, leaving coins on a counter will most likely get someone chasing you down the street to return them.
  • 💵
Argent Japan remains more cash-attached than its neighbours. Cards work in larger businesses, but many small restaurants in Dotonbori and the stalls at Kuromon are cash only. ATMs at 7-Eleven stores and post offices accept foreign cards 24/7.
  • 🏥
Santé No mandatory vaccinations. Healthcare is excellent but expensive without cover, so travel insurance is strongly advised. Pharmacies (kusuriya) are plentiful; some medicines that are routine in Europe, notably those containing pseudoephedrine, are banned from import.
  • 🚨
Urgences Medical and fire: 119 | Police: 110 | Japan Visitor Hotline (24/7, English): 050-3816-2787
🛡️Safety
★★★★★ Extremely Safe

Osaka is very safe by international standards, even though its local reputation is that of a rougher city than Tokyo — a strictly relative judgement. Walking alone at night is unproblematic across almost the whole city, and lost property is usually returned to its owner.

📍 Areas to Watch

Nishinari (Airin), south of Shinsekai, is the one area locals suggest avoiding at night — street drinking and poverty rather than violent crime. Ordinary care in the weekend crowds of Dotonbori.

⚠️ Common Scams

  • Touts (kyakuhiki) around Dotonbori and Kitashinchi steering people towards bars with inflated bills — legitimate bars do not solicit on the street
  • Hostess bars charging undisclosed table fees: always ask the price before sitting down
  • Fake monks selling prayer-bead bracelets near tourist sites

💡 Safety Tips

  • Keep your hotel name written in Japanese: many small streets are unnamed and Japanese addresses follow a block logic, not a street logic
  • If you lose something, go to the nearest koban (neighbourhood police box) — the recovery rate is remarkably high
  • During an earthquake or typhoon alert, the NHK World app carries official instructions in English
📱Mobile Connectivity
Network Coverage Full 4G/5G coverage across Osaka and the whole Kansai region, including metro tunnels. 5G is especially dense in Umeda, Namba and around Universal Studios Japan.
Network Quality ★★★★★
Operators NTT Docomo, SoftBank, au (KDDI)

📶 Why you'll need mobile data

  • Google Maps and Japan Transit Planner to navigate a rail network where JR, Osaka Metro, Hankyu, Hanshin, Kintetsu and Nankai all coexist
  • Booking Universal Studios Japan and Super Nintendo World timed entry from the app, often sold out same-day
  • Translating handwritten counter menus in Kuromon and Shinsekai with Google Translate's camera mode
  • Paying with a digital ICOCA or Suica in Apple Wallet, topped up anywhere with a connection
  • Receiving real-time earthquake and typhoon alerts — Japan broadcasts these over the mobile network

Activate your ZapSim eSIM before you fly — connected the moment you land at Kansai International, with no hunting for a wifi hotspot.

🚄Getting Around

✈️ From the Airport

Kansai International (KIX): the Nankai Rapi:t reaches Namba in 38 min (¥1,490), the JR Haruka serves Tennoji in 30 min and Shin-Osaka in 50 min (covered by the JR Pass). Limousine bus to Umeda in 60 min (¥1,600). Itami (ITM), the domestic airport, is 30 min from Umeda by monorail and train.

🗺️ Getting Around

The Osaka Metro has 8 lines; the Midosuji (red) links Umeda, Shinsaibashi, Namba and Tennoji and covers most of what you need on its own. The JR Osaka Loop Line circles the city. A rechargeable ICOCA card works across the whole network, including in Kyoto, Nara and Kobe.

📱 Essential Apps

  • Japan Transit Planner (Jorudan) — precise rail routing, with platforms and transfers
  • Google Maps — reliable in Japan for train times down to the minute
  • Osaka Metro — official map and live service status
💡

The Osaka Amazing Pass (1 day, ¥2,800) covers unlimited metro and bus travel plus free entry to around thirty sites, including Osaka Castle and the Umeda Sky Building observatory. It pays for itself after three visits.

💰Budget & Costs
🍜 Budget Meal ¥600–1,000 (takoyaki, ramen, lunch teishoku)
🍽️ Mid-Range Meal ¥2,000–4,000
🛏️ Budget Stay ¥3,500–7,000 (business hotel, capsule)
🏨 Mid-Range Stay ¥12,000–22,000
🎒 Backpacker Budget ¥7,000–10,000 per day
✨ Comfort Budget ¥20,000–35,000 per day

💡 Osaka is markedly cheaper than Tokyo for both food and accommodation at equivalent quality. Conveyor-belt sushi and kushikatsu counters let you eat very well for under ¥1,500.

🎌Culture & Etiquette

✅ Do

  • Play along with local kuidaore pride: in Osaka, opening a conversation about food is entirely normal
  • Stand on the right on escalators — the opposite of Tokyo, and Osakans care about it
  • Say "okini" (thank you in Kansai dialect) and you will get a smile every time
  • Queue at the marked positions on metro platforms
  • Finish your ramen bowl and slurp your noodles audibly — it reads as a compliment

❌ Don't

  • Never double-dip a kushikatsu skewer in the communal sauce — the city's most sacred rule
  • Don't eat while walking in the street, except in street-food zones like Dotonbori
  • Don't take phone calls on trains: silence is the norm
  • Don't stand chopsticks upright in rice — the gesture belongs to a funeral rite

💡 Did you know?

  • Osakans stand on the right on escalators while the rest of Japan stands on the left — the habit is usually traced to the 1970 World Expo
  • The word "kuidaore" means to ruin yourself by eating: it is the city's own chosen nickname
  • Osaka ran the world's first rice futures exchange, opened at Dojima in 1697
  • Kansai dialect is the language of Japanese comedy: almost every manzai double act comes from the region
❓Travel FAQ
How many days do I need in Osaka?
Two full days cover the city itself: Dotonbori, the castle, Kuromon and Shinsekai. Allow three to five days if you use Osaka as a base for Kyoto, Nara and Kobe, all of which are under an hour away.
Should I stay in Osaka or Kyoto?
Osaka offers cheaper rooms, far livelier nightlife and direct access to KIX. Kyoto is quieter and closer to the temples. Trains between the two run every few minutes and take 15 minutes, so sleeping in Osaka and day-tripping to Kyoto is a common choice.
Is the JR Pass worth it for an Osaka trip?
Rarely, if you stay within Kansai: the Osaka Metro and the private Hankyu, Hanshin and Kintetsu lines are not covered. A rechargeable ICOCA, or the Kansai Thru Pass for private lines, works out cheaper. The JR Pass only makes sense once you add Tokyo or Hiroshima.
Do I really need mobile data in Osaka?
Yes. The Kansai rail network mixes six different operators and connections are decided in real time. Add Universal Studios timed-entry booking, translating handwritten menus, and earthquake alerts broadcast over the mobile network — Japanese public wifi, with its Japanese-language portals, does not cover it.
